Onward Yankton invites community members to share their vision for Downtown Yankton during the Design South Dakota learning studio on Feb. 1 from 5:30-8:30 in the Avera Pavilion.
Yankton is the latest community to be accepted into the Design South Dakota program, a three-day design event that helps small towns in the state shape their future. Design South Dakota has worked with a variety of small rural communities in South Dakota, including Corsica, Sisseton, Deuel County, Hill City and Huron.
Onward Yankton applied to be a part of Design South Dakota to help bring community members together to energize them toward a shared vision for Downtown Yankton, according to R.J. Rieger, president of Onward Yankton’s Board of Directors.
“Onward Yankton is a community-driven organization. Our future is not up to Onward- we need community input,” Rieger said. “By lending their voices as part of the Design South Dakota process, community members will work together to dream up what Downtown Yankton could become. We hope people come prepared to set aside any preconceived notions of Yankton’s limitations and come ready to think big.”
The Design South Dakota team considers a number of factors when looking at redesigning a community, including developing safe options for walking, biking, driving and public transit; creating choices for housing, shopping, recreation and employment; preserving the community’s core by revitalizing and restoring downtown infrastructure; designing shared social and public spaces; promoting a community identity and developing strategies for economic development and marketing.
The process begins on Feb. 1 during the learning studio event, when the Design South Dakota team will spend time with local residents learning about their dreams and visions for the future. On April 6, 20 architects, engineers and designers from outside the area will fly into Yankton to work with community members to create design sketches for the reimagined downtown. These sketches will be shown in a final presentation to the community on April 8.
